Hi all,
Spencer van Vloten here.
Today a meeting about the spousal cap was held between several MLAs and reps from the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. MLAs included Parliamentary Secretaries Niki Sharma, Dan Coulter, and Grace Lore.
The focus of the meeting was discussing how to move ahead with collecting data and stories about how people are impacted by the cap, as well as exploring what changes can be made to address this.
Soon, as part of this process, there will be a call for people to share their stories with policymakers. They are still working on setting up the system to do this, so I will let you know where to send your stories once everything is ready.
Initially the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction heard us out, but weren't interested in taking any other steps.
But as people have continued to press, and more MLAs have gotten on board, that's no longer the case.
I'll be getting a better idea of the timeline of the next steps soon, and will keep you posted.
As always, let people know about this issue and how it's so hurtful to so many Canadians. Your support is what makes the difference.
Be well
Spencer van Vloten
