Hi Everyone!
Spencer van Vloten here with an update about the campaign to change policies that prevent British Columbians from receiving social assistance if they have a spouse.
We've met with several MLAs over the past few weeks, explaining the policies to them and why they are unacceptable. Each MLA has agreed with the need for change, and the process is under way for the issue to be raised in the BC legislature when it is back in session.
Here some important points that were stressed by the MLAs:
1. A petition like this is a very important tool for policymakers to draw upon when calling for policy reform. The more support that is shown for changing a policy, the stronger the case to change it.
2. It is important that the changes being called for are clear and specific. We have to say to the government 'we want this' in as much detail as we can.
Both these points give direction to our efforts moving forward. We need to continue getting the petition and the issue out there to as many people as possible, and to work together in our calls for change.
Change doesn't happen overnight, but we are doing well so far and on the right path together!
Thanks so much for all you do,
Spencer van Vloten,
