Like many others, I discovered later in life that I am neurodiverse. I realise now this lets me see the world from a unique perspective, and when things don’t work, I’m drawn to want fix them.
However, it has also highlighted the unnecessary complexities of various systems we encounter daily and they seem to be getting worse.
From struggling to secure a discount promoted by signing up for a newsletter to uncertainty about whether an important medical appointment has been scheduled - these are just some examples of how technology used by retail, health, finance and service industries can induce anxiety and frustration.
These systems often employ entrapment, encourage to self serve, but can lead people into complicated processes that result in dissociation with reality for many users. While self-service technology empowers us to take control of our interactions with these industries, the processes are often fraught with difficulties and dead ends. In some cases even the provider cannot take over responsibility when things go wrong.
