Why this petition matters

Started by Rachel Houtteman

Hello, I am a freshman at Grand Valley currently studying communication science and disorders. GVSU was my first choice, because I really enjoyed the environment around campus and appreciated how they enforced COVID-19 restrictions.

As a first year student at GVSU I was unfamiliar with the food services offered here. When I arrived, there were more options open for dining and the food was overall good. I didn’t have much to say about the dining experience until the Fusion restaurant was shut down. Along with that there were not many other options pertaining to dining around campus. With Kleiner being one of the only restaurants open on North Campus, there was an influx of students wanting to eat at Kleiner which increased the wait time for food and beverages. GVSU has henceforth changed these restrictions to where students no longer have to wait outside for their food and beverages.

An issue with dining that I would like to bring to everyone's attention is the overall quality of the food. I have gotten food poisoning from the Kleiner establishment one time and the Subway establishment another time. As I live in a residence hall the other students that live around me have also complained about food poisoning from Kleiner. The quality of the food has made myself and others groggy, tired, sluggish and sick too many times to count. Along with the constant fear of any sickness equating to COVID-19 it is frustrating that we are often not being given food that is prepared and cooked properly that can nourish ourselves in this very overwhelming time.

What I would like to see change is cleaner and better food options at the establishments that are currently open. Whether it means additional training for the employees or fresher ingredients for the kitchen. Alternatively while I know this option is not as feasible if there were more options available on campus to eat for example the Fusion establishment, I believe it would make the situation easier for those who do not live on North Campus or those who commute to campus for work purpose or academic purposes only. Overall something needs to be done so that the students can receive the nutritious meals they were promised without having the fear of getting sick anytime they eat.
