Last summer (2020), Lake Cravath was drained and has yet to be refilled. The ecological destruction cannot be overstated. What used to be the lake bed is overrun with terrestrial plants. The water levels are so low that one can walk halfway into the lake without getting their feet wet. Fish are suffering from lack of habitat and food. Mollusks are suffering from lack of habitat. The water purity is suffering from lack of natural biological filtration. Innumerable clams have died because they suddenly found themselves on dry land. In one small section of one side of the “lake”, I collected dozens of dead clams that were completely whole and would have been alive and healthy to keep the lake water clean had it not been drained. Water birds are suffering from lack of habitat and food. The people of whitewater are suffering from a tremendous eyesore that used to be their beautiful lake, inability for recreational activities on the lake, and an altered climate due to lack of lake effect. Fishing has been suspended indefinitely. The beautiful Lake Cravath Lakefront Park has been transformed into a miserable excuse for a prairie that should not exist in the first place. Enough is enough. The dam must be closed and the lake must be allowed to refill; it should not have ever been drained to begin with.
