Make Sawtry Way (B1090) Safer for All
The Issue
Following the tragic death of a Wyton-on-the-Hill resident in the 50 zone outside the estate entrance in June 2017 and many vehicle near misses and collisions before and since (some quite serious), Community Roadwatch (CRW) has been campaigning and submitting (failed) applications for funding to Cambs County Council Local Highways Initiative (LHI) Panels simply to 'Make Sawtry Way Safer'.
Despite wholesome and widespread 99% support (in writing) from residents and businesses, the first application in 2018 did not receive support from the Constabulary's Traffic Management Officer and that subsequently influenced the Panel and the application was automatically disqualified because it did not score more than 1 point. Also, the Panel believed that the dangers from traffic at 60-70 mph just inches away from children, cyclists and families using the overgrown, narrow, footpath along the 'Mad Mile' had been exaggerated.
The application in 2019 with continued substantial local support and 17% contribution from us fared better but again because of a Police objection was scored lower than applications for Speed Indicating Devices (SIDs) or even two HGV surveys. No feedback except for the Police objection, was available to explain this apparent funding priority.
So this year, we have submitted a 3rd LHI application, with the written support of key stakeholders, and using last year's County Council Highways feasibility study. Naturally, Police approval will help us to lower the two speed limits that legally currently permit traffic to attain inappropriate/dangerous speeds. Also, this time we are funding it 50% and providing a mobile Big Lottery-funded £3k SID for use in the new 40 zone that will include the RAF Wyton camp roundabout. So, via this survey, we are seeking /reinforcing support from YOU the local public for our 2020 project to 'Make Sawtry Way Safer'.
Please contribute your support with bad experiences, so finally we can impress the Police and County judging panel - sitting early 2021 - that we really are representing a desperate need for them to approve/agree to fund a much needed worthy project that seeks to benefit and safeguard many hundreds, if not thousands, of B1090 road users and that will save lives.
