Ensure that Chatteris' street lights are suitable for community projects

The Issue

Chatteris is a small, historic Fenland town. The town's street lights are maintained by Balfour Beatty, under a PFI agreement with Cambridgeshire County Council.

Balfour Beatty want to replace the town's current street lights with new lamp posts this summer. The current posts were installed in 2001 and designed to be in-keeping with the town's Historic feel. Additionally, the 2001 posts have eyelets and brackets which are used to hold the town's Christmas lights, as well as the hanging baskets maintained by Chatteris in Bloom.

There is no guarantee that the new lamp posts will support either the Christmas lights or the hanging baskets. The town has not been given the option of retaining the existing posts.

We want Balfour Beatty to:

  1. Consider retaining the current posts, which are in-keeping with the townscape and support community projects.
  2. If (1) is not possible, ensure that any replacement posts will at least support the Christmas lights and the hanging baskets.
  3. Ensure that the 2016 Christmas lights are not disrupted by any work carried out.
