Calling on the LAOS Goverment to Investigate & prosecute the illegal wildlife traders!

The Issue

In my work with Hongxiang Huang, an independent wildlife trade investigator, I've seen firsthand the devastating impact of the illegal wildlife trade in Laos. Hongxiang has spent years documenting how endangered species, such as pangolins, are trafficked, sold, and consumed openly in markets and tourist-facing restaurants across the country.

His findings reveal a shocking reality: businesses in Laos are brazenly violating international wildlife protection laws by dealing in illegal wildlife products. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) aims to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival, yet enforcement in Laos is severely lacking.

This illicit trade in wildlife not only poses severe risks to global biodiversity and threatens the survival of species, but it also undermines international efforts to protect our planet's natural heritage. The lack of action allows these illegal activities to persist, driven by profit at the expense of precious wildlife.

I call on the Lao government to immediately investigate, shut down, and prosecute businesses involved in the illegal wildlife trade. It is crucial that they enforce international wildlife protection laws under CITES without delay. Moreover, increased transparency and accountability, through regular audits and public reporting of wildlife trade activities, are essential to ensure compliance.

By taking decisive action, the Lao government can demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding endangered species from across the globe as well as preserving their country's unique biodiversity. Protecting wildlife is not just a national responsibility, but a global one that demands urgent and resolute action.

Please join me in urging the Lao authorities to act swiftly and decisively. Sign this petition to make sure that the illegal wildlife trade in Laos is no longer tolerated.
