Yesterday signaled a month since ACL Principal Deputy Administrator Mary Lazare was reported by Disability Scoop to have made comments about "segregation" and "reinstitutionalization" of people with disabilities.
On August 3rd, Disability Scoop also reported Lance Robertson stated to Representatives Gregg Harper (R-MS), Jim Langevin (D-RI), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), or Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) in a written response that Mary Lazare "did not state, or intend to express, the opinions referenced in (their) letter."
Since then no clarification or formal apology has been given to the disability community about these statements. What stands is a paltry apology made by tweet on the ACL Twitter account.
We deserve better than a 140-character tweet. The disability community and its allies have concerns that have not been addressed and our voices have been ignored. Frankly, this is unacceptable. The apology read as artificial and simply done do quell any sort of backlash.
Ms. Lazare, we have asked for your resignation, but in lieu of resignation, a statement of formal apology is acceptable. Please refer to this article in the Huffington Post, written by Sarah Blahovec, a disability rights blogger and activist, on what should be covered in an appropriate, formal apology.
We currently only have 177 signatures, so spreading the word by social media is completely encouraged. Unfortunately, I feel as we move further in time, this incident will be forgotten, though it isn't any less important. These comments, when not clarified by Ms. Lazare, produce doubt in our current administration and could signal further issues.
