Calling for Officer Aaron Ambers to be fired
Calling for Officer Aaron Ambers to be fired
On April 18th 2021, Dee Garrett was wrongfully arrested and assaulted by several LMPD officers. One of which, Aaron Ambers, punched him in the face 5 times, another officer involved, Cory Galloway, had a history of excessive force and has had several complaints put in against him at the PSU. Dee was standing on the corner of 6th and Jefferson in Downtown, Louisville with a 10 foot cross peacefully expressing his 1st amendment rights. He has been a consistent target by LMPD who is being investigated by the US department of justice due to their history of racial discrimination and use of excessive force. After nearly a year of giving the run around about the status of the investigation, Ericka Shields has announced that she will not be holding Aaron Ambers or any of the officers accountable for beating Dee up last year. She admitted early on what they did was wrong, that it was not consistent with their use of excessive force policy, that Dee was simply on the side walk with his cross when the police arrived to beat and arrest him. But still she has decided that she will not pursue any disciplinary action. On top of that her excuse for making this decision is Dees criminal history… from 15 years ago. As if that excuses what her officers did, as if his past meant he deserved what happened to him. But this is what they do every time they brutally assault, or kill a black person. They did it to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Jacob Blake and hundreds more, Dee was no exception to them. Since Ericka Shields has been chief of police the relationship between the police department and community has increasingly become more strained. She has continued efforts to hinder transparency and accountability in her department and we can not stand for this. We, the community, are calling on the new Chief, Gwinn-Varoella, and Mayor Greenberg, for Officer Aaron Ambers to be IMMEDIATELY terminated.
