Callie, a beautiful and devoted facility dog, tragically died after being left in a scorching hot car. Her passing was not just a loss felt by those who worked alongside her, but a devastating blow to the countless individuals she helped through her service. Facility dogs like Callie dedicate their lives to supporting people in need, providing comfort and companionship to those who are often at their most vulnerable moments.

Her death was ruled an accident.  Although we have utmost compassion for the individual involved,  better awareness is a must, to prevent more animals from suffering . There have been multiple other local incidents of animals being left in vehicles, during extreme heat or cold.

Sadly, Callie's death highlights a severe gap in the protection of  animals who are left in vehicles in extreme weather  conditions. Under the current law, individuals can only be prosecuted, if there is evidence of intentional abuse or neglect. There needs to be legislation that accounts for inadvertent  carelessness and neglect, that can result in harm or death to the animal. It is our hope that enacting this law will create better awareness and fewer tragedies.

We are calling for the enactment of 'Callie's Law' – legislation designed specifically to protect animals by mandating safe practices for handling and housing them. This includes comprehensive training for handlers and owners, temperature control measures for transportation, and prosecution measures for any potential or real harm to an animal. 

Statistics from the Humane Society indicate that hundreds of pets suffer from heatstroke annually due to being left in vehicles. This is an avoidable tragedy with proper regulations in place. Lawmakers must act swiftly to implement policies that prevent such senseless loss, guaranteeing that these noble animals are protected.
