Governor Spencer Cox has failed to adequately protect Utah’s interests and natural heritage, which is a deep concern for me as a resident who values our state’s unique landscapes, resources, freedoms, and future. I am troubled by policies and positions that I believe have weakened protections for our cherished public lands and national parks, which are not only vital ecological treasures but also a cornerstone of Utah’s identity and tourism economy.

One of my chief concerns is the governor’s support for the expansion of large-scale AI data centers despite growing concerns about their immense water and energy demands. Utah is already facing long-term water challenges, and it is difficult to justify prioritizing massive corporate developments that consume significant resources while everyday Utahns are asked to conserve. Decisions about our state’s future should be made with sustainability and future generations in mind, not based on the financial interests of large corporations seeking to profit from Utah’s resources.

I am also alarmed by the increasing use of surveillance technologies, including automated license plate reader systems and flock cameras, without what I believe are sufficient protections for privacy and civil liberties. Public safety matters, but so does personal freedom. Utah has a proud tradition of valuing individual rights and limiting government overreach. The expansion of surveillance infrastructure deserves greater transparency, accountability, and public input before becoming a permanent part of our communities.

Beyond any single policy issue, I believe Utah deserves leadership whose primary loyalty is to the people of Utah. A governor’s responsibility is to represent and defend the interests of Utahns first. Not the agenda of any president, political party, wealthy donors, or corporate interests. Regardless of who occupies the White House, Utah’s governor should be willing to stand independently when necessary and put the needs of our state above political alliances or personal gain.

These concerns collectively raise serious questions about the direction of our state and the priorities of its current leadership. Utah’s public lands, water resources, privacy rights, and independent voice deserve stronger protection than they are currently receiving. I believe it is time for a renewed commitment to responsible stewardship, transparency, accountability, and policies that place Utah citizens first.
