Call to Columbia U. to Contribute to Building Elevators at the 125th St Train Station

Call to Columbia U. to Contribute to Building Elevators at the 125th St Train Station
The Issue
Dear President Bollinger/Shafik/Interim President Armstrong,
We the undersigned are residents, neighbors, employees, and stakeholders in the West Harlem and Morningside Heights communities. After years of advocating for the addition of elevators at the 125th Street 1 train station, we believe that Columbia’s active engagement and financial support for the project will be instrumental in bringing the project to fruition. We ask that you work with the MTA to develop plans to make this station ADA accessible, including contributing funding toward the elevator installation project at this station.
As you are aware, this station is currently only accessible by stairs or an escalator. This makes it difficult for people with disabilities, seniors, individuals carrying children or using strollers, and others to use this station. This issue impacts thousands of your students, staff, and Columbia affiliates every day. Whether to access your educational buildings, dormitories, or other businesses in the area, elevators would improve accessibility to both your historical campus and the new Manhattanville campus. In addition, your neighbors in the community have long expressed support and eagerness to see this station made more accessible. The surrounding community includes many seniors, public housing residents, families, individuals with disabilities, and others who would benefit from this improvement.
As a long-standing community partner involved in multiple areas of this community, Columbia is in a unique position to assist. Your significant technical, financial, and logistical expertise can take this project from a dream to a reality. As an institution with an endowment of over 13 billion dollars, we believe it both within your means, and a moral necessity, to contribute to making the subway station, and our city, more accessible.
We hereby call on Columbia University to work with the MTA to develop the elevator installation project, including committing funding toward the project. Columbia University has the financial resources and vested interest to support this project. After numerous years of discussions, we hope Columbia University will commit to contributing toward the success of a project to build elevators at the 125th St Station.
Sincerely,
Assembly Member O'Donnell and Community Members [sign on below]
