Call to Action to Establish Equitable Uniform Dress Code for CBAA Basketball Teams

The Issue

As parents, we try and support our children’s love and pursuit of sports in any way we can. My daughter is passionate about all of her sports, and I support her in every stride she takes on the court. However, there is a stark disparity that has caught my attention and is of much concern to me and many other parents of sport-playing children in CBAA. The uneven dress code between boys and girls during sports events has become too evident to ignore.

I have received multiple explanations for the disparity from CBAA, ranging from protecting the modesty of the girls to protecting their safety.

We believe in fairness and equality, and it is imperative that our children, regardless of their gender, perceive and experience this in every aspects of their lives, particularly in sports which plays a vital role in character development. Unfortunately, the current situation in CBAA doesn't echo these values, with boys and girls required to wear different attire while competing (pinnies/jerseys for boys and tee shirts for girls).

Statistics indicate that gender discrepancies in sports, which can manifest in different ways including dress codes, may impact girls' self-esteem and their continued participation in sports (Women's Sports Foundation, 2019). I, like many other parents, do not want this for our children. All they should feel is the thrill of the game, the determination to win, and above all, the joy of fair play.

Therefore, we propose CBAA sports administration implement an equitable dress code for all sports activities. Let boys and girls all wear tees or all wear pinnies/jerseys, as long as it's the same across genders. Let's not just level the playing field, but also the attire our kids wear on it. The true essence of sports lies in equal opportunity and fair play.

Join us now and sign this petition. Ensure our children learn the cherished values of equity and fair competition through an equitable dress code. Let's all stand together so our children can play together.
