On a Sunny day in November 2017 Students at Spring Arbor University spoke up to Administrators about LGBTQ voices of students not being heard. Outside, a chalk message in rainbow font read: “Do you see us now?” A clear reflection of how LGBTQ students felt at the “liberal arts university”.
Although no property was damaged or harmed during this art project, Spring Arbor University Immediately washed the chalk art away. On November 8th, 2017 Queen SAU shared these images with a post saying “It's not just about chalk, friends. #QueerSAU ️”
Spring Arbor University retorted back with a post statement saying: “We see you. We love you. We are discussing this in chapel this morning. We will be posting further information on how students and alumni can (properly) share their voices with SAU administration.”
Schools cannot punish students for 1st amendment free speech, unless it disrupts school. Under the same laws, schools cannot punish students for content of their protests, they cannot be punished for the clothing they wear- unless it disrupts school. Students have the right to express themselves, as long as it doesn’t disrupt the school. With title IX exemptions Spring Arbor university is saying that being LGBTQ is disrupting school.
