21st March  2024

Dear Minister Norma Foley,

I am writing to call for your immediate support to expedite the delivery of the long-awaited extension and refurbishment of Lucan Community College, without delay for our children, young adults and future generations of Lucan. The project has been delayed, for unclear reasons, for over 15 years.

I now request your urgent response to the below questions :

Following several recently tabled Parliamentary Questions (PQs) and Topical issues addressed by our TD’s from Dublin Mid west that received generic responses, the Parents of Lucan Community College now seek clarification on our  pending building project.
 Specifically:

1: What is the process involved in issuing a letter of intent?

2: What is the average time required for issuing a letter of intent?

3: What is the current delay in issuing the letter of intent for the Lucan Community College Extension building project?

In light of the multitude of PQs and Topical issues  over the past 15 years and promises from various Ministers, parents are keen to understand the Minister's commitment and whether they will contribute to the realisation of the school build.

The school is held in high regard in the Lucan community and the demand for places far outstrips the places available. Last year the school received 465 1st year applications for 2023 with only 168 places to offer.
The building environment does not align with the high standard of education currently being provided in terms of quality, capacity and the ability to cater for all students with a diverse range of needs. Many parents of children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) have had to seek help outside of the local area (and away from siblings already enrolled in the school) due to the lack of a Special Needs Unit (SNU).

Other critical aspects of the new building will resolve many ongoing historical issues, which will finally align with building standards where our children will thrive. This includes a new gym hall, larger canteen, larger school entrance, additional car park spaces, dedicated drama and music space, reinstatement of the Jack Harte library, outdoor hard court, new general and specialist classes and replacement of the leaking roof.

I await your immediate reply.
