Call to action by PRASA and Minister of Transport , Erosion of a vibrant suburb
The Issue
Maskani has for years been a blight on the suburb of Woodstock with no support or intervention by the Department of Transport or PRASA whom own the land. Muggings, shootings, serious drug use, prostitution and every other social ill imaginable are the order of the day, this needs to stop. It is time that Government and PRASA take action. Despite being the target of numerous sweep operations in the past, the situation persist. Maskani needs a multi-agency approach. We request that Minister Fikile Mbalula and the new Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) CEO, Nosipho Damasane ,along with the City of Cape Town, intervene by:
- Providing access to safe spaces for the community illegally squatting there.
- Social workers and drug intervention teams to visit the site.
- Provide ongoing visible policing, stop and search for drugs and illegal firearms.
- Enforce curfew, while the country is in lockdown
- Clean up operation to be done immediately. Keep the area clear of illegal structures by ensuring that the area is inaccessible.
This should deliver quantitative results. They can make a difference, not only to the people living in inhumane conditions, but the businesses and residents who have witnessed, and are impacted daily by the activities taking place. Apathy from the community is viewed as approval.
LET’S MAKE A CHANGE BY HAVING OUR VOICE HEARD, WE WILL LOOSE THE BUSINESSES IN THIS VIBRANT AREA DUE TO THE SITUATION, WE WILL LOOSE RESIDENTS WHOM MAKE THIS COMMUNITY AS SPECIAL AS IT IS.
*** DO not donate - We are not asking for money , we are asking for change***
