Call on the UK government to properly fund sexual abuse and rape services
The Issue
As a survivor of sexual abuse, I have experienced first-hand the heartbreak and frustration of reaching out for help, only to find that the necessary services were underfunded and overwhelmed. It is devastating to witness fellow survivors, who are already facing immense emotional and physical trauma, being further distressed by the lack of timely support that should be readily available.
Sexual abuse and rape can cause lasting psychological effects, and immediate access to support can make a significant difference in a survivor's recovery journey. However, in the UK, there is a growing crisis in the availability of these crucial services. In many regions, survivors are placed on long waiting lists for therapy or counselling, and some are even turned away due to strained resources. Statistics presented by Rape Crisis England & Wales indicate that approximately 176,000 people are relegated to waiting lists each year. This is unacceptable.
The UK government has the power to change this dire situation by ensuring sexual abuse and rape services are adequately funded. Proper investment in these services not only provides much-needed support to survivors, but it also facilitates public safety by educating communities and reducing stigma. By prioritizing funds for additional therapists, safe spaces, and educational programs, the government can demonstrate genuine commitment to supporting survivors and addressing this pervasive issue.
Now more than ever, it is essential that we come together and urge our leaders to act. It is time we support those who have bravely come forward and need our help to heal. Petition the UK government to allocate sufficient resources for sexual abuse and rape services and ensure no survivor is left waiting, unheard, or unsupported. Please sign this petition to make a stand for those who need our voices the most.
