INDIA is demographically named so, as its early civilization originated on the banks of Sindhu River; this is as per modern history. Its actual name is BHARAT. This name has a very deep meaning & rich heritage behind it.

Vishnu Puranam

A verse from VISHNU PURANAM states that "The Country that lies North of the Ocean and South of the Himalayas is called BHARAT, and the people here are the children of BHARATI."

BHARAT comes from Sanskrit Root word (Bhru) which means to carry knowledge.

With above connotation, BHARATI is derived which is the name of Goddess Saraswathi. Vishnu Puranam refers to people of India as children of Saraswathi & illustrates that people of this country have been bearers of great knowledge.

Law

The 1st of 395 articles in the Constitution of India states

India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States.

In June 2020 the Supreme Court ordered a plea to change India’s name to ‘Bharat’ be converted into a representation and forwarded to the Union government for an appropriate decision.

Supreme Court Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad A. Bobde said “Bharat and India are both names given in the Constitution. India is already called ‘Bharat’ in the Constitution”. 

Therefore the decision and ability to make this happen rests with the Bharata Janata Party (BJP) led by Shri Narendra Modi ji. 

The name India can be traced back to the Greek term ‘Indica’ modernised in English as India whilst ‘Bharat’ is powerful as it was the Freedom Struggle motto "Bharat Mata ki Jai’.

In the eyes of the world, British India was diminished when it became India.

In the USA, Indians are called South Asian to avoid confusion with North American Indians. 

From the first half of the 16th cent. the Old English origin name India sometimes denoted the whole of South-East Asia to the east of and including India, and sometimes denoted the islands of South-East Asia (i.e. East Indies).

The East India company was named after its geographical trading mandate to contrast with the West India of the Caribbean where people are called West Indians today.

Other countries have reclaimed their cultural heritage and identity.
