Call for Universal Peace Education for All Countries Receiving US Foreign Aid
The Issue
We the American People and our supporters abroad recognize that, while United States development and humanitarian programs have produced considerable, positive results, our foreign policy and security programs have not been as effective (Brookings). We witnessed this over the last month as the conflict between Israel and HAMAS intensified. We see this in the 100+ armed conflicts that are currently taking place across our globe (Geneva Academy). We therefore believe that an essential component is missing in our foreign aid equation to over 200 countries and territories worldwide:
Peace education has the power to transform every child, adolescent, community, and nation. It creates ripple effects that benefit societies indefinitely. And far too often, it is left out of our country's expectations of foreign nations receiving aid.
We are American teachers, parents, and citizens deeply concerned for the future of our children, nation, and world.
We urge our government to require every country receiving its foreign aid to implement a universal peace education program. Peace education promotes the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values needed to bring about behavior changes that will enable children, youth and adults to prevent conflict and violence, both overt and structural; resolve conflict peacefully; and create social conditions conducive to peace (UNESCO). It is an effective tool in creating a more peaceful world.
In 2022 alone, the U.S budgeted approximately $38 billion in economic assistance across all regions globally (USAID). Imagine if each of these dollars was tied with an expectation of promoting peace education? The potential impact on global harmony could be significant.
We call upon our representatives in Congress to pass legislation requiring all recipients of U.S. foreign aid to incorporate universal peace education into their educational systems from the preschool through postsecondary levels. This initiative will not only promote global stability but also ensure that our financial support is contributing towards lasting change – a peaceful world for future generations.
Please sign this petition today if you believe in the power of peace education as a tool for lasting world peace.
