Call for stricter penalties for harming animals on the road
The Issue
We lost our beloved cat to a speeding driver. Just like any other innocent creature, she had a beating heart, and her life was precious to us. It is a pain that many families have endured, losing their pets to reckless driving with no one held accountable. It’s heartbreaking to see the lack of consequences for those who harm our furry companions without a second thought.
Every year, thousands of cats lose their lives on roads due to careless driving. In the UK, statistics show that out of the approximately 9 million cats, about 230,000 fall victim to traffic accidents annually. Yet, these incidents often go unnoticed and unpunished. This is not just about our pet but about respecting life, no matter how small or significant it may seem to others.
We are calling on lawmakers to consider more severe penalties for drivers who hit and run over animals. Similar to laws protecting humans, there should be legal obligations for drivers to stop and report if they hit an animal. We propose a system that includes mandatory reporting, increased fines, and potential driving bans for those who fail to stop after injuring or killing an animal.
Our roads can be safer, and together, we can ensure that no animal unfairly loses its life due to reckless speeding and negligence. We urgently need your support to call for action and to ensure our streets are safe for all living beings.
Sign this petition to help bring about necessary change and ensure that animal lives are valued as they should be.
