Call for resignation of Jackson County Board of Elections chair and director

The Issue

Jackson County citizens are today calling for the resignation of the chairman of the Jackson County Board of Elections and the board’s director in the wake of election interference with the campaign of Jenny Lynn Hooper for county commissioner.

Jackson County BOE Director Amanda Allen refuses to answer questions about how Hooper’s voter registration file was tampered with in recent days. Following an incident in 2022 where BOE staff uploaded a single precinct’s results twice, thus temporarily throwing two commissioner elections to Democratic candidates, the public has lost complete confidence in the Democratic majority’s ability to impartially administer elections in Jackson County.

Hooper has been registered to vote in commissioner District 3 since the 1990s and has, since that time, voted at the Savannah precinct in District 3. Hooper filed in December to run as a Republican candidate for the District 3 seat. Board staff certified in December 2023 and January 2024 that she did live in District 3 and was registered to vote in the district.

The Jackson County GOP received an anonymous email in late July stating that Hooper’s voter registration status had been tampered with and her voting district changed to District 1. This is in violation of state law, which requires a voter to be notified and a hearing held if their voter registration is subject to dispute.

Jackson County Board of Elections Director Allen refuses to answer Hooper’s very basic questions about how and why her voter registration data was tampered with. Allen was quoted in the Sylva Herald this week as being unable to provide answers.

Despite County Attorney John Kubis telling Hooper, while on a call with Allen, that the matter came up as part of a request, Allen continues to claim the events transpired as part of a “routine audit.”

Jackson County citizens demand and deserve honesty and integrity in local elections. The actions of the Democratic-controlled local Board of Elections in the general election of 2022 and in tampering with Hooper’s 2024 campaign have undermined that trust.
