Currently, in the UK, in routine breast screening, density is not assessed, nor recorded and not given to women.
However, we recommend that women continue to ask. Here is why - this week, a woman who attended a mammogram reported:
"The lady (mammographer) was so lovely.... she spoke freely about breast density. A few women have mentioned it to her so this is good. She said I do not have dense breasts".
On the other hand, some women report that some mammographers/radiologists refuse to enter into a discussion about breast density (due to the official Breast Density Position Statement).
This highlights the urgent need for a standardised approach, and the inequalities women face trying to access important breast density information. This is now being investigated by the UK imaging experts.
