Call for Mobilization: Eradicate the Special “Star” Section in Schools

The Issue

Competition is always a factor in any aspect of the Philippines and also in the world. It is within human’s nature to do better and to be on top. Yet, people develop this attitude more in school because school grades narrates the mental capability and how good a person in studying. Quizzes, recitations, and graded performances are the ones consisting the final grades in every quarter. And in every quarter there’s this so called “Top 10” which is the ranking that consists the name of the students who has the highest grade among the class. As what the teachers say “Students create their grades and the teachers compute it.” And it’s somehow true. After the school year if you have an average grade which is considered as low grade then the next school year you will belong to a “General Section” which consists of the students who had grades that are low or not high enough to be considered to belong on the “Special Section.” This so called “Special Section” are consists of the students that are considered as excellent or outstanding students because they have higher grades among their classmates last year and they’re considered special students for that. So here’s our point, having low grades doesn’t define the mental capability of a person. Every person don’t deserve to be called a not so smart or not so wise person just because you have low grades. But in school students can’t dodge the fact that if you are in general section, people will discriminate you and think of you as a moron student. It seems like not being on the special section degrades you as a student, what’s worst is you will also degrade yourself as not smart enough, not worthy of your parents financial support, not enough as a person. And this kind of mentality may lead to depression, worst case is death. This is possible because there are countless cases of suicide just because of these cases.

This campaign is initiated to remove this so called “Special Section” and treat students fair and equal. Accept what the students are capable of. School grades doesn’t dictate someone’s future. Low grades doesn’t make someone less special. Being a person and being a student living your own way in this world is special. Being you are special. This campaign also is calling all the students in the world to support the campaign by putting their signature as a sign of unity for this campaign. Even the graduates, working people or “tambay” people can sign if they want to. This is not a problem in school or in the Philippines; this is a major problem in the world.

We’re hoping for signatures for us to be heard and be supported.

Let us all unite our voices to stop the discrimination! Let us look forward to eradicate the divisions within our aptitudes as students. It’s time to break the pressures, assumptions, and expectations within our competencies.

Let no walls divide us with our own intellectual abilities. It’s our right as students to have a good and equal education in each classroom. So, be one and be part of our movements to end the social stratification--- segregated system in schools.  No to labels! Laban mga students!
