The Issue

We call on David Eby and the NDP to urgently propose a tactical coordination agreement with Emily Lowen and the Greens for the final days of the 2026 B.C. provincial election.

On October 18, 2026, David Eby called on Green voters to vote for the NDP to help prevent the Conservatives from winning enough seats to form government. But if David Eby wants to prevent a Conservative government in B.C., he should be willing to coordinate directly with Emily Lowen to help make it happen.

This could involve identifying two groups of ridings:

  • Ridings where the NDP can help the Greens win: Identify seats that are strategically important to the Greens where the NDP could step back, stand down candidates, or redirect campaign resources to give Green candidates a better chance of winning.
  • Ridings where the BC Greens can help the NDP win: Identify seats that are strategically important to the NDP that are at risk of being lost to a Conservative candidate, and ask the Greens to consider standing down candidates or redirecting campaign resources to give the NDP candidate a better chance of winning.

Specific ridings should be determined through rapid negotiations conducted through good faith, taking into account each party’s priorities, local electoral circumstances, polling, and other factors. Identifying 3-6 ridings each would be a reasonable starting point.

We call on David Eby and the NDP to take the initiative and request a coordination arrangement with Emily Lowen and the Greens. Such an agreement is not guaranteed: trust between the parties is low, and either party could decide not to participate. But the timeline is short, and it’s time to act now.

If Eby wants people to vote strategically for his candidates, he should be willing to take strategic action himself.

Why Does It Matter?
Voters shouldn’t be asked to make sacrifices for a party that isn’t willing to make sacrifices of its own. If preventing a Conservative government is the shared goal, both parties should be prepared to accept political and electoral trade-offs in order to achieve it.

A reciprocal agreement also gives voters something meaningful: it would demonstrate a willingness to compromise and put the best interest of British Columbians ahead of political and party interests.

Is That Even Possible?
Strategic coordination between political parties is not unusual. In 2024, parties in both France and the United Kingdom coordinated their efforts to improve their collective chances to defeating a shared political opponent.

These arrangements can be formal or informal. They can be planned well in advance or be negotiated the last minute. Coordinating across party lines during an election may be uncomfortable, but it is actionable even now.

Where Could It Make a Difference?
The parties themselves should know better than anyone where coordination would have the biggest impact. Likely priorities for the Greens would be ridings that election Green MLAs in the last election and South Island ridings.  Likely priorities for the NDP would be ridings where the NDP candidates lost by a small margin in 2024 and Lower Mainland ridings.

What Can I Do?
Time is short, so we need to move quickly.
