Call for Ice Rink In Liverpool
The Issue
We, the undersigned, petition Liverpool City Council to invest in a council-owned ice rink that can serve as the home of an Elite League Ice Hockey team. Liverpool has a strong and passionate ice hockey fanbase, and with ice hockey ranking as the fifth-largest sport in the UK, it is time to bring professional ice hockey back to the region.
Why Liverpool Needs an Ice Rink for an Elite Team:
Strong Fan Base & Growing Demand
The ice hockey community in Liverpool is substantial, with fans frequently traveling to Manchester and Sheffield to watch games.
Local recreational and junior ice hockey programs show strong participation, highlighting the demand for a professional-level facility.
Current Monopoly of Ice Rinks by Private Operators have a monopoly on local ice rinks, limiting accessibility, affordability, and opportunities for the growth of the sport.
A council-owned facility would ensure fair pricing, availability for all age groups, and create a venue that prioritizes local teams and development programs.
Proven Economic Benefits from Elite League Teams
Sheffield Steelers and Manchester Storm generate substantial revenue from ticket sales, merchandise, sponsorships, and hospitality.
The Steelers regularly sell out their 9,000+ capacity arena, with an estimated annual revenue exceeding £3 million.
Manchester Storm benefits from an average attendance of over 2,500 per game, creating a significant economic impact for local businesses.
A Liverpool-based Elite League team would attract similar crowds, boosting the local economy through tourism, job creation, and increased foot traffic for surrounding businesses.
Key Benefits of a Council-Owned Ice Rink:
Economic Growth & Local Business Support – Increased visitors would benefit hotels, restaurants, and transport services.
Job Creation – Full-time and part-time jobs in facility management, coaching, event coordination, and hospitality.
Youth & Community Development – A dedicated facility would allow for more junior development programs, skating lessons, and public access.
Elite-Level Entertainment – Liverpool deserves a high-level ice hockey team to compete at a national level and bring exciting sporting events to the city.
Call to Action:
We urge Liverpool City Council to:
Conduct a feasibility study into building a council-owned ice rink suitable for an Elite League team.
Seek private and public funding to support the project, including sponsorships, grants, and local business partnerships.
Work with ice hockey organizations to create a long-term sustainable plan for a professional Liverpool ice hockey team.
Liverpool has a proud sporting heritage. Now is the time to reclaim our place in the UK ice hockey landscape. We, the fans and community members, stand ready to support and rally behind this initiative.
