Call for Fair and Consistent Coverage of HBCUs in Media
The Issue
As both an HBCU student and a journalism student, I care deeply about how colleges and universities are represented in the media.
I recently made a video discussing a pattern I have noticed in conversations surrounding Historically Black Colleges and Universities: when something goes wrong at one HBCU, the conversation can quickly expand beyond that individual institution and become a broader criticism of HBCUs as a whole.
That distinction matters.
Problems at individual HBCUs should be reported honestly. Students deserve accountability, transparency, and institutions that live up to their responsibilities. HBCUs should not be protected from legitimate criticism simply because of their history or cultural significance.
At the same time, the failures of one institution should not automatically be treated as representative of every HBCU.
News organizations, journalists, commentators, and digital media platforms have significant influence over how people understand higher education. Coverage of HBCUs should therefore provide the same level of context, specificity, and nuance that should be expected when discussing any college or university.
When a problem occurs at an HBCU, coverage should clearly distinguish between an issue involving one institution and evidence of a broader trend. Headlines, commentary, and online discussions should avoid using isolated incidents to make sweeping conclusions about HBCUs as a whole unless there is evidence to support those conclusions.
What We Are Asking For
We are calling on journalists, editors, commentators, news organizations, and digital media platforms that cover higher education to:
- Apply consistent standards when reporting on HBCUs and other colleges and universities.
- Clearly distinguish problems at individual institutions from broader trends involving HBCUs.
- Provide appropriate context when discussing challenges facing HBCUs.
- Avoid presenting isolated incidents as representative of the entire HBCU community without evidence.
- Hold individual institutions accountable without unnecessarily generalizing their failures to an entire category of schools.
- This is not a request to shield HBCUs from criticism.
It is a request for fairness.
Accountability and fairness can exist at the same time. HBCUs should be challenged when they fall short, but those conversations should remain focused on the institutions, decisions, and circumstances involved rather than automatically becoming judgments about HBCUs as a whole.
