Call for EU unity on Saudi sanctions and energy supply pivots
The Issue
In 2022, during one of the most challenging times of my life, I experienced the invaluable support of a friend from Yemen. As I grieved for a family member in Germany, an ally emerged from a situation so filled with hope amidst despair. This experience not only strengthened my belief in the power of human connection but also opened my eyes to the broader geopolitical dilemmas we face today.
The world was reeling from the shock waves of the Nord Stream pipeline explosion, and the energy crisis eroded the foundations of stability in Europe. It was amidst this instability that Saudi Arabia took advantage, increasing its trade ties with Moscow beyond €3.7 billion. Such alliances serve only to remind us of the vulnerabilities in our energy and defence supply chains. As an Irish citizen, I have great pride in our nation's history of standing firmly against oppression. Yet, witnessing the leverage that regimes with questionable records obtain by exploiting global crises has made it clear that the EU must take decisive action.
We are calling for EU unanimity in imposing sanctions on Saudi Arabia. By aligning all member states, we can leverage the Control of Exports Act 2023 to halt military licensing. This is a crucial step not just for thwarting oppressive regimes, but for safeguarding our own sovereignty and security.
Moreover, the European Union must pivot towards domestic energy independence. By investing in renewable resources and diversifying our energy supply, we can reduce our reliance on external entities whose influence does not align with our values for human rights and collective well-being.
Our goal is clear: inspire the European Council to unite decisively against economic pressures exerted by regimes prone to exploiting crises. We must ensure that Europe's energy and defence sectors remain resilient and aligned with our commitment to human rights and governance.
