It’s time our government Stops Clucking Around with animal welfare
The issue
In Australia, existing laws still allow for systemic cruelty to be inflicted on Australian farm animals and despite widespread belief that the welfare of our farm animals is in good shape, the reality is: one in every six battery hens live with broken bones and cannot spread their wings; pregnant sows can be confined to cement stalls, unable to even turn around; animals can be routinely declawed, debeaked and castrated without pain relief and intensive puppy farms still exist. This is not life – this is cruelty beyond belief – and this is currently the ugly truth about animal welfare in Australia.
We expect better and no animal deserves to suffer. You can help end these practices and improve the lives of millions of animals by signing this petition calling for the establishment of an Independent Office for Animal Welfare (IOAW).
Two years ago the Australian government dumped responsibility for animal welfare on the states and territories and withdrew funding. This absence of national leadership for animal welfare has meant Australia is lagging shamefully behind our international peers, and has been officially marked down in the Global Animal Protection Index. If our government continues clucking around on animal welfare, animals will keep enduring unnecessary pain and a lack of consumer and investor confidence in our farming practices may have very real economic consequences.
If we don’t act now, millions of animals will continue to suffer and our global reputation will continue to slide.
