Call for an Immediate End to the Russia-Ukraine War
The Issue
As the war between Russia and Ukraine drags on, it continues to cause immense human suffering alongside devastating ecological destruction. The tragedy of war is not confined to humanity alone.
Bombardments and artillery fire are relentlessly destroying natural habitats, claiming the lives of countless wild animals and domestic pets alike. Furthermore, as the conflict prolongs and major urban centers—including state capitals like Kyiv and Moscow—come under direct attack, nationwide administrative capacity and public security risks severe collapse.
When governmental oversight and resources are strained to their limits, the ability to monitor and protect national parks and wildlife sanctuaries diminishes rapidly. This management void leaves critical conservation zones unprotected. Consequently, endangered species inhabiting regions like the Russian Far East—such as the iconic Siberian tiger and the Amur leopard—face unprecedented vulnerability to illegal poaching operations exploiting the lack of state enforcement.
Animals possess no defense against armed conflict, nor do they have the means to flee its reach. They are the silent, direct victims of this catastrophe. Safeguarding our planet's precious wildlife and ecosystems fundamentally requires political stability and peace.
We strongly urge an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to peaceful resolution to protect innocent lives and prevent the total collapse of our shared environment.
