Call a convention of states to stop government pay during shutdowns
The Issue
We the people are tired of both political parties playing games with the livelihood of the American people. It is increasingly frustrating to witness government shutdowns being used as leverage in political negotiations, while hardworking Americans and their families suffer the repercussions. During these shutdowns, government employees often bear the brunt of political stalemates, facing uncertainty about their income and financial stability.
A government shutdown not only impacts the livelihoods of federal workers but also affects millions of Americans who rely on vital services and programs. Essential services can be hampered, and the ripple effects can be felt across the nation, from delayed government checks to suspended social services.
To prevent these unfortunate consequences and to ensure that our elected officials feel the impact of their decisions, we propose the introduction of an amendment through a convention of states. This amendment would halt all pay for government employees, including members of Congress, during a government shutdown. By tying their salaries to the proper functioning of the government, it could encourage more responsible and timely negotiation and compromise between politicians.
Article V of the U.S. Constitution gives us the power to convene a convention of states, provided two-thirds of state legislatures apply for it. This measure is a crucial check and balance, enabling the states to propose amendments when the federal government fails to act in the best interest of its citizens.
This proposal is not just a symbolic gesture; it’s a practical solution to a recurring problem. It emphasizes accountability and transparency, ensuring that those who are elected to serve the people cannot escape the consequences of political gridlock.
Join us in calling for a convention of states to propose this necessary amendment. It is high time to hold our government accountable and to protect the American people from becoming pawns in political games. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and to pave the way for a more responsible and fair government.
