Reinstate Arabic courses in the Fall & Spring at California State University of Sacramento
The Issue
By signing this petition you are signifying that you demand Arabic courses at Sac State are allowed the proper funding to remain available during regular semesters (Fall & Spring).
Hello everyone,
My name is Madeline Waters, I recently ran into what seemed like an unreal problem. I went to register for Arabic 1b in the Fall and found out that it is not offered except during summer. I’m in need of your signatures today to see if this gross injustice can be rectified in the near future. Students have rights to education in basic language courses such as Arabic. To not offer Arabic all year round I would consider blatant discrimination.
Injustices are as follows:
- Students must pay for 2 full summer sessions to be taught Arabic courses which means that students who need to take Arabic cannot receive financial aid from FAFSA if they want to take the classes.
- If you somehow can afford one summer session of Arabic 1a and cannot afford to pay for the second summer session which is over 1000 dollars you must wait an entire year before you can have access to the second course Arabic 1b
- Languages require continuous practice in order to remain proficient. The way that Sac State offers Arabic courses is robbery. We cannot remain proficient in a language like Arabic with a one year gap between each course.
After emailing our Administration I was told that the department took a pay cut and decided that they couldn't "afford" to provide this class during the normal semesters of Fall & Spring.
I sincerely hope that all of you take into consideration the aforementioned points when signing and spread the word about this telling attempt by the administration to extinguish Arabic on Sac States Campus.
Thank you so much!
