Graduation is an important milestone in many people's lives. CSUN's student population is predominately people of color, with many of the graduating classes being not only the first to attend college in their family, but the first to graduate. COVID-19 was something no one expected and the Class of 2020 and 2021 have suffered greatly. Students and families deserve the right to celebrate this accomplishment while following CDC guidelines - especially with many already vaccinated. We, the students have accommodated so much with on-line classes (while paying full tuition to attend class from our bedrooms), the least CSUN could do for the graduating classes is plan an in-person graduation like the rest of the CSU campuses or colleges are - Cal State LA, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Fullerton, SDSU to name a few and others like USC and UCLA. These campuses were able to find an outdoor venue to celebrate their students's success in being able to graduate in a pandemic. A virtual graduation is not the same and although we appreciate CSUN's step in offering a car parade, that is not enough. We strongly believe CSUN is able to find an outdoor venue large enough for graduation to be held in person. If that is not possible, at least offering in person graduation per major (which is smaller than by department). There are so many ways to tweak this to have a safe, social distancing, CDC guidelines following graduation - especially with LA County on the verge of being in the yellow tier (most least restrictive). We deserve this and it is the absolute LEAST CSUN can do for their students.
