Californians are witnessing the worst unintended consequences of our recall system. If Governor Gavin Newsom is recalled, he will be replaced by whichever "candidate" receives the largest share of votes on the second question of the recall ballot.

It's plausible that a new governor could be chosen with fewer votes than those who want to keep Newsom, undermining the will of the majority of Californians. This means that any special interest with enough resources can effectively undo democratic elections when it suits them. This process is also a massive waste of taxpayer dollars - this recall is costing Californians more than $80 million.

This petition proposes changing the rules around gubernatorial recalls to:

  • Require that the elected Lieutenant Governor automatically replace a recalled Governor;
  • Furthermore, it proposes that if a recall vote fails, no other recall efforts may be pursued during the current term of office;
  • And if a Governor is successfully recalled, that the ascendant Lieutenant Governor may not be subject to any recall effort during the remainder of that term.

This isn't about partisanship - it's about ensuring democracy and stability in CA!
