Change handyman limit laws in California

The Issue

The handyman of today has changed, they are becoming businesses, passing background screenings, becoming certified and carrying insurance with properly structured businesses.  This puts them in a class that didn’t exist when handyman laws were written. California’s restrictions on the handyman are outdated and not practical in today’s economy. The handyman deserves to make a fair livable wage. We ask that the contracting without a license $500 including materials limit be increased to $2500 and to not have this amount include materials purchased by homeowner. Since there is no contractors license for home repair specific and the general license prohibits a contractor from doing a single trade job or repair, we ask that home repair of existing property be exempt from any limitation. A handyman that passes a background, becomes certified, carries insurance, and a business license with a properly structured business, deserves to be treated with the same respect as any other properly run business. Contractor handyman stings are performed unlawful without regard to the business just the license that doesn’t apply. Often times being forced to become a licensed contractor to make the penalties go away.
