Reform the California National Primate Research Center to abolish non-human animal testing
The Issue
The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC), located at the University of California-Davis, is one of seven “flagship primate centers” in the United States. The CNPRC is massively and directly funded by the federal government, UC Davis student tuition dollars, and tax dollars. Animal experimentation is costly and often ineffective, costing US tax-payers nearly $15 billion annually. 1 The bipartisan organization of Associated Students of UC Davis passed Senate Resolution #4 to condemn the CNPRC in November 2019, recognizing its brutality and ineffectiveness. 4
The need for testing on non-human animals is outdated. From the standpoint of scientific viability, primates are inaccurate and unreliable proxies for human medical and behavioral research. Genetic variability is vast between monkeys and humans, thus research data is extremely rare to directly transfer between the two. The chronic and extreme psychological effects of stress on caged primates invalidates and skews data that is attempted to draw conclusions for the average human who is exposed to a typical daily amount of stress. As of 2020, technology shows there are comparable cruelty free methods in practice. 2,3 Primates and other non-human animals are incredibly complex, sentient, social creatures that not only have wants, needs and desires, but they also feel pain, fear, joy and love.
By signing this petition, you denounce the California National Primate Research Center at the University of California, Davis, and you affirm that animal exploitation is inherently cruel and unnecessary. Furthermore, you support the termination of all forms of non-human animal use and exploitation at the CNPRC and the institution’s transformation to become a research center dedicated to using modern research methods that eliminate all use of non-human animals.
