Bring Plant-Based Meals to California Schools!  Ask the California Legislature to vote YES on AB 479.

Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian has introduced landmark legislation incentivizing K-12 public schools across the state to offer plant-based lunch options. AB 479 - The Plant Based School Option (Healthy Climate-Friendly School Lunch Act) will increase access to healthy and climate-friendly plant based food for children across California schools. The bill is co-sponsored by Animal Hope in Legislation, Friends of the Earth, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and Social Compassion in Legislation.

This important piece of legislation provides a choice for children, increasing access to healthy foods, limiting greenhouse gas emissions, focusing on animal welfare as well as the environment.

The National School Lunch Program serves lunches to 30.3 million students a day. Replacing some of these meals with plant based options significantly reduces our dependency on meat, and other products made through the exploitation of animals.

Some of these children and their families depend solely on the meals provided to them through their schools. Nationally, about 1 in 5 school-aged children is obese and nearly 1 in 4 teens has diabetes or prediabetes. Highly processed foods like chicken nuggets, hot dogs, and hamburgers should not be the only options available to those within the school system. If prisons and hospitals can offer plant based options, the least we can do is give the youth that same right.
