Dear Athletes, Parents, and Coaches,

In light of CIF cancelling the California State Track and Field Championships, athletes from Del Norte Track and Field (San Diego Section) have decided to spearhead a campaign against CIF's decision to cancel the state meet for the second consecutive year due to COVID-19 Restrictions.

We urge CIF to refrain from entirely canceling the state meet as it was originally scheduled at the end of June. A lot could change between now and then. Governor Newsom has promised to re-open California by June 15th if "vaccine supply is sufficient" and "hospitalization rates are stable and low". We understand the issue of travel logistics and the fact that four of the Northern California sections have cancelled their regional meets. However, this is unfair to the rest of California's athletes, especially those in the Southern regions. 

Many juniors are looking to achieve PRs in competitive races to be considered for recruiting and seniors are hoping to cap off their high school careers before they head off to compete at the collegiate level. With the state meet cancelled two years in a row, some athletes who had the potential to go may never have gotten to experience this prestigious, once-in-a-lifetime sporting event. 

By signing this petition, you are pledging your support for the reversal of CIF's decision to cancel the 2021 California State Track and Field Championship, granting the ability of hundreds of high school athletes to compete at the state level and achieve their high school dreams and goals.
