SUMMARY
Lucia “Mama Lucia” Bravo is an 85-year-old woman who has been incarcerated for 27 years. Lucia has many medical issues associated with her age and she is in a desperate fight against leukemia. As a result, Lucia has a severely compromised immune system - making her highly vulnerable to Covid-19. Social distancing is impossible while incarcerated and the virus is already infecting people in the prison where she is incarcerated. Lucia urgently needs her sentence commuted in order to properly shelter from the virus, and obtain adequate medical attention and nutrition. Her family is able to care for her outside of prison and is eager to support her through her fight with cancer.

Please join us in asking Governor Gavin Newsom to commute Lucia Bravo’s Life Without Parole sentence and grant her immediate, compassionate release.

BACKGROUND
Lucia Bravo is an elderly woman who has been incarcerated for 27 years. On top of medical issues associated with her age of 85, Lucia has been battling leukemia for the past 5 years. Lucia’s health condition makes her especially vulnerable to Covid-19.

Lucia has a Life Without Parole sentence, making her ineligible for release. Her only hope for release is a commutation of sentence by California’s Governor Newsom.

Lucia is known by many in prison as “Mama Lucia” for her compassion and care. Throughout her sentence she has taken the time to care for many women inside. If she saw someone sad she would listen and pray for them to find peace to overcome their worries.

Lucia is one of many elderly, medically-vulnerable women in the California prison system. In the current health crisis, Lucia and others are made increasingly vulnerable by prison conditions that accelerate risk of infection, including  severely inadequate medical care.

Lucia has experienced several incidents of medical negligence by prison staff. She is repeatedly denied urgent medical care and the nutrition she needs to give her a fighting chance against cancer. Lucia urgently needs to be released from prison to receive life-saving medical intervention. Her family is able to care for her and ensure she has access to medical care outside of prison.

Lucia prays to spend the last moments she has with her children and grandchildren. Her family eagerly awaits her return home. They set aside a room for her years ago, in hopes she would one day be granted release.

We urge Governor Newsom to commute Lucia Bravo and allow her to spend her remaining time in the care of her loving family.
