We need comprehensive Sex Ed in California schools

I just graduated high school this year, and when I walked into a community class on health and sexuality last summer, I figured I already knew everything I needed to about preventing Sexually Transmitted Infections and pregnancy.
But where I live, students get only a few days of Sex Ed in four years of high school -- and sometimes no Sex Ed at all. Taking this community class I was shocked to learn how much important information about things like Sexually Transmitted Infections and birth control my peers and I had never received. We missed out on important discussions about things like healthy body image and how to deal with abusive relationships.
The California Healthy Youth Act would change this by making the Sex Ed that is taught in schools comprehensive. It would also strengthen existing laws, like the one that says schools can't only tell students to wait until marriage to have sex, which has actually happened in some schools recently.
If it’s not bad enough that so many of California’s students are being left in the dark when it comes to crucial reproductive and sexual health information, some of them are even being given information that is just plain wrong, or incomplete. Plenty of Sex Ed courses in California give out HIV prevention information that is outdated or inaccurate, and many are not structured to be inclusive of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.
When young people can get accurate and factual information on sexual health from trained educators, and can talk about it with their peers, it makes a big difference. That's probably why 89% of parents in California support their children getting Sex Ed in school -- because they know it's critical for our basic health.
Today I work for a local non-profit, and I’ve learned a lot about sexual health, body image issues, sexual orientation and gender identity. I use that information to make sure my friends know how to keep themselves healthy and safe, but they should have other resources besides me.
Sign my petition to tell Governor Brown and State Senators to create comprehensive Sex Ed for students across the state by passing the California Healthy Youth Act. Do it for the next generation of Californians.
