The broadcast spraying of herbicides cover our roadside ditches, which flow into our creeks, potentially contaminating our watersheds, wells and our health. There are better ways to control vegetation. Chemicals requiring protective gear for 12 hours post application are being sprayed in areas used by hikers and bicyclists with no posted warnings. These chemicals have a half-life of 500 days in soil and 990 days in water! Mowing and/or planting of native grasses are the most effective means of weed control and do not pollute the environment or endanger our health. Help us urge Caltrans to stop using herbicides on San Mateo County roadsides and adopt non-chemical methods of weed control.
