NOAA Fisheries announced in March at the PFMC meeting that the Southern Resident Killer Whales are in trouble and their population continues to decline to now 75 animals between 3 family pods! 2 of these pods travel as far south as Monterey CA searching for food. Their main forage is Chinook Salmon to which NOAA is recommending we need more salmon to help feed the whales. In response WA state is planning to raise 50 million more smolts this year to help the whales and California needs to follow suit and raise more fish! NOAA estimates that ALL 75 animals need about 400,000 to 600,000 more adult Chinook salmon to rebound! CA estimated share and predictions are 90,000 more adults between the two systems of Sacramento River and Klamath river! This will also cross over and help the salmon fishing industry which has been struggling since 2006.
