Colby Lenz started this petition to California Board of Parole Hearings

Rickie Blue-Sky is a transgender, Native American elder serving his 33rd year of a 27-to-life sentence in a women’s prison in Chowchilla, California. He is 70 years old. On April 6, 2016, Blue-Sky will appear for his fifth time before the CA Board of Parole Hearings. At his last hearing, he was denied parole for "lack of insight" because he has continued to claim innocence since his trial. The Board of Parole also accepted arguments that Blue-Sky is a threat to public safety because of his transgender identity. The DA argued that since Blue-Sky “lies” about his gender he must be a liar at core. As a transgender person of color, Blue-Sky has faced blatant discrimination since his arrest and throughout his trial and imprisonment.

Please join CCWP and the TGI Justice Project in urging the parole board to grant Blue-Sky parole at his upcoming hearing. Join us in demanding that Board of Parole commissioners and the DA cease all gender-based discrimination against Blue-Sky. We also urge the board to consider Blue-Sky’s 70 years of age and his more than 32 years in prison with an outstanding record and a demonstrated commitment to personal growth and community service. Blue-Sky presents absolutely no danger to society.

Blue-Sky has worked tirelessly for transgender and Native American rights while imprisoned. He has been a kind and capable mentor for countless transgender and gender non-conforming people. Blue-Sky has facilitated two-spirit/transgender support groups and advocated for support services. He succeeded in winning the right to special counseling services for transgender people in the Chowchilla prisons. He also helped win the right for people in CA prisons to conduct Native American religious programs. For ten years, Blue-Sky facilitated Native American Medicine Wheel and 12-step programs. Since being imprisoned, Blue-Sky also achieved his Bachelor Degree in Humanities, a Victim Advocacy Certificate and a Paralegal Certificate.

With your help, we hope to welcome Blue-Sky into our supportive community in the Bay Area. Please join us in demanding Blue-Sky’s release on parole.
