The Issue

We are Dominators Cricket Club of Calgary. This is our petition and we call on all cricket lovers to promote and support this petition. Let’s transform Calgary into the “Canadian Home of Cricket”.

Background: A global sport from 16th century, a heartbeat of 1.5 billion people and counting. Cricket is not just a sport; it is a passion that unites people worldwide. It is at the center of sports world, crucial part of world’s economic engine, cultural identity and a key element in community bonding. A major sport that can’t be simply ignored.

Cricket in Calgary: For countless residents of Calgary, cricket is more than a weekend activity. As it is publicly known, currently Calgary faces a significant shortage of cricket amenities, which hampers the ability of adults, juniors and children to partake fully in this sport thus limiting the potential of this iconic sport and people. Our city has only a limited number of cricket grounds, and with the cricket’s growing population and popularity, these facilities are increasingly overwhelmed. Additionally, comparing few cricket grounds with facilities available for other sports is simply appalling and speaks volume for the injustice cricket has faced in Calgary over the years, which must see its end now and start on the road to recovery leading into top notch cricket infrastructure that Calgarians deserve.

As a member of the growing cricket-loving community in Calgary, we are reaching out to urge the Mayor and city councilors to take decisive actions to promote and support cricket. First and foremost by increasing cricket amenities throughout our city. This is not an exhaustive list that we are putting forward but just few valid suggestions to begin with;

1. Cricket for All: Develop new cricket fields and associated amenities like nets that can accommodate all levels and formats, including leatherball, tennis ball, professional, recreational, adult, junior , and women cricket. The provision of diverse playing fields can cater to different needs and enhance the overall experience for players.

2. Leverage Existing Resources: Where applicable we propose the conversion of existing school grounds into cricket fields. This not only maximizes the use of available space but also encourages youth participation in cricket by making it accessible in school environments.

3. Night Cricket: Specifically, we suggest converting the “Inland Cricket Ground” and “Westwinds Cricket Grounds” into venues that can host night cricket during the summer. Both of these grounds are suitable for night cricket and can be conveniently retrofit for the night cricket. Adding lighting to these existing grounds will significantly extend available playing hours and increase the participation.

4. Develop Indoor Cricket Facilities: Winter in Calgary is harsh and feeds into mental/health issues but through indoor cricket we can minimize its impact. Establishing indoor cricket facilities will provide opportunities for playing cricket during unfavorable weather conditions or night time. Indoor cricket would benefit all interested groups. Furthermore, one large indoor cricket arena will be a perfect match for 6 months of harsh weather.

Please sign this petition to show your support for these vital enhancements to Calgary's cricket infrastructure. Calling all the residents to have your say in making Calgary the next “Canadian Home of Cricket”.  This will benefit players, cricket bodies and business community.
