Calgary Flames: Retire Theo Fleury's number 14
Calgary Flames: Retire Theo Fleury's number 14
The Issue
Theo Fleury #14 played in over 1,000 games and scored over 1,000 points in his NHL career. He played twice in the World Junior Hockey Championships.
Theo Fleury played on the Calgary Flames team that won the Stanley Cup in 1989. During the 90-91 Season he had 104 points with the Flames. Theo twice represented Canada in the Winter Olympics and won a Gold Medal in 2002. He played in a total of 7 All Star Teams. In addition, he played in 2 World Junior Games, 2 World Championships, the Canada Cup and the World Cup of Hockey.
Despite his small stature, he played large and strong. He was loved by Flames fans and was revered by the opposition.
Theo Fleury was not solely a hero on the ice, he became a hero off the ice too. He fought and overcame a long struggle with drugs and alcohol and when diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in 1995, Fleury joined with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada to host an annual golf tournament in Calgary, which raised over $1 million in one of the organization's largest fundraising events.
Recently, Theo has become best known for his autobiography, Playing With Fire, in which he spoke out about years of abuse at the hands of pedophile, Graham James.
Theo Fleury has been a role model for many and now IT'S TIME to honour him for his playing ability and his strength in overcoming and rising above a life of challenges.
