Save the Cal Poly Plant Conservatory

The Issue

The Cal Poly Plant Conservatory will be demolished in June of 2019 due to the construction of the Science and Agriculture Teaching and Research Complex. Currently there is not a clear plan to rebuild.

The Cal Poly Plant Conservatory is an incredibly important resource for students and teachers.

Students learn hands on horticultural skills applicable to future careers.

Over 800 students per year use the conservatory to learn about botany in an immersive learn-by-doing way.

Professors store teaching material (plants) that is otherwise hard and expensive to source. Student research projects are conducted, many on rare California native species.

Plants are grown for enrichment of campus landscaping and for restoration purposes.

The Plant Conservatory is also open for public exploration, impacting community members in addition to students.

We want Cal Poly administration to recognize the importance of the plant conservatory and either have a real, publicly available plan to build a new one or leave the current one standing. We will not tolerate being in the dark on the future of this resource we value so highly.
