Cal Poly Math Department: Get rid of CR/NC grading for lower division math classes!
The Issue
In light of the recent events surrounding COVID-19, in person finals have been canceled at Cal Poly. As a result of this, Cal Poly's Math Department has made the descision to not hold any finals for lower division math classes, give perfect final exam scores to all students in those classes, but assign Credit/No Credit grading for the term. If a letter grade is wanted, a student can choose to take the final exam at a later date, possibly sometime towards the end of spring quarter/summer.
However, I strongly urge department head Benjamin Richert, Dean Wendt, and President Armstrong to reconsider this policy and give students the choice to assign letter grades for this term without a final examination. Myself and the hundreds of students who have worked so hard in our respective classes have been undermined by this department decision, with a grade that does not reflect the work and hours put into these classes. In addition, a CR/NC grade will leave so many students out of the opportunity to get on Dean's List for the 2019-2020 school year.
This policy puts stress on not just the students, but the professors as well who have been attending emergency meetings and sending hundreds of emails in the short time period of a few days, who will also need to take the time out of their schedule to administer a final exam after the ending term.
