The Independent Coast Observer reported the great news today. Yesterday, 9/14/16, Judge Chouteau ruled in favor of the environmental groups, and logging is effectively stopped in the Gualala River's floodplain, the timber harvest plan called Dogwood, for the remainder of this year. You can read a detailed accounting of this decision on Friends of the Gualala River website at www.gualalariver.org.
The judge wrote in his decision that Friends of the Gualala River and Forest Unlimited had "demonstrated a clear, imminent threat of irreparable injury" and the evidence presented "demonstrates that the logging activities may harm ecologically sensitive, protected wetlands, flora, and fauna."
With all this great news, the judge did require FoGR and Forest Unlimited pay a $10,000.00 bond within a week's time. So, along with attorney fees, we need to raise monies. There are three groups now in the lawsuit, the third one being the Dorthy King Young Chapter of the Native Plant Society. Here is the info on how you can donate, just pick one or all of the groups, any amount is welcome.
Friends of Gualala River, www.gualalariver.org, PO Box 1543, Gualala, CA 95445
Forest Unlimited, www.forestunlimited.org, PO Box 506, Forestville, CA 95436
Dorothy King Young Chapter, CNPS, www.dkycnps.org, PO Box 577, Gualala, CA 95445
The lawsuit is likely to come to trial in late November.
Thank you for caring. We speak for the River! Jeanne Jackson
