CA student’s Education At Risk - Graduate The Seniors
The Issue
The current pandemic of the Virus named COVID-19 is spreading fast across the world and all schools in the country are currently closed. As Seniors, we are concerned about graduation being postponed and not being able to receive the credits required for our courses.
Schools across the country are closed and have the possibility of staying closed for the rest of the school year. Furthermore, there are no mandatory classes required online to continue student education ensuring them of their credits. This puts us, Seniors, at risk of having our school year delayed.
There is currently no notice of action from any school districts as to what their plans will be. The news about the coronavirus only seems to progressively get worse. Being Seniors, we have worked hard for four years and now it has come to the last few months of High School. We have been waiting for this moment and would hate to have it taken away from us. We believe that we should have the right to ensure our education. We want to persuade the School Districts and the Board of Education to exempt credits for the class 2020.
As you know, not everyone has access to computers or the internet at home. The simple fix to this is to lend computers out to everyone who needs it but it’s not possible since resources are extremely limited. To simply put it, there is no absolute way for everyone to be learning at home while trying to fight the “invisible monster” as our President Trump called it.
Online classes are also not ideal. As online classes cannot substitute the experience of being in a classroom where you get to interact face-to-face with teachers. With our current technologies and software, we have available, it’s not directly designed for online classes. For example, in order to participate in online classes, you would need a strong internet that can handle the amount of bandwidth needed to receive live video from a teacher. In order for the teachers to accommodate helping students, it would be impossible to prioritize everyone and answer every single question. Moreover, It is a big change from traditional school to online school which makes it hard for us to adjust to the new curriculum which may set students up for failure rather than success. Most of the online courses are also self-motivated, but with the current coronavirus spreading so rapidly, it triggers many people’s emotions such as anxiety and depression.
THE FUTURE DEPENDS ON US, TAKE A STANCE!
Join us in taking a stance for student educational rights. Sign this petition to call for CALIFORNIA School districts and the Board of Education to consider the exemption of credits for the class of 2020 and allow for the graduation of thousands of seniors. WE WANT OUR SENIOR YEAR BACK!
