Deb Shell started this petition to BUSD School Board and

Our children were coming home from school with their packed lunches barely touched.  They complained of not enough time to eat.  We decided to go observe our school's lunch and that day we witnessed a 15 min lunch period with 18 children still standing in line for food when the recess bell rang to conclude lunch.  We watched them miss recess to get served, and dump their lunch directly in the trash, resulting in hungry kids and wasted food.  It was infuriating.

We since learned that 15 instructional minutes were added by the district to the day.  In doing so, principals needed to figure out where those 15 minutes would come from.  Many took 5 min off lunch, 5 min off recess and the district added 5 min to the day.  What was already a short 20 min for lunch just got shorter.

Administrators say lunch is technically 20 min, but based on our observations, they dismiss the students 5 min early so they can prepare the cafeteria for the next group.  So, even if your school says, 20 min on the schedule, we recommend you go and see for yourself.  Logistics need to be considered!

At Malcolm X Elementary School, our kids have 15 min which INCLUDES:  time to get to the cafeteria, stand in line for kids that buy hot lunch, and time to clean up.  It does not even allow children time to wash their hands before eating or bathroom breaks.  A recent lunch study across 4 BUSD schools showed the last child in line having 4 min to eat.

We find this unacceptable and inexcusable.

We, the undersigned, call on the BUSD to:
 1. In the very least bring back the 10 min that was removed from our lunch/recess period.

 2. To give students an "adequate time for lunch AND define what an "adequate" amount of time for lunch is.  (NOTE: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that students get at least 20 minutes for lunch. But that means 20 minutes to actually sit down and eat — excluding time waiting in line or walking from class to cafeteria. Refer to: http://www.actionforhealthykids.org/game-on/find-challenges/cafeteria-challenges/1435-time-to-eat )

 3. Set a policy to have recess before lunch as studies have proven that students arrive more timely, ensuring more minutes to eat and they eat more of their lunch as they work up an appetite on the playground, hence creating less waste.
